Vanity presses rarely announce themselves. Most use publishing language that sounds professional, because the appearance of legitimacy is part of what they're selling. Here's what to actually look for, specifically, before you sign anything or send a payment.

  1. They accept almost anything.

    If a "publisher" says yes to your manuscript within minutes of seeing it, with no real conversation about fit, positioning, or the market for your book, that's a sign the acceptance was never really the point. Real publishers, hybrid or traditional, have some standard, even if it's a conversation rather than a formal rejection process.

  2. The manuscript gets published without your active review.

    This is the single clearest warning sign in the entire industry, and it's worth repeating on its own line:

    If anyone offers to publish your book without involving you, run.

  3. The price keeps growing after you've signed.

    A legitimate process states its deliverables and cost upfront. A vanity press pattern often looks like a low entry price followed by a stream of "recommended" upsells (editing you thought was included, marketing packages, expedited anything) that weren't disclosed until after you'd already committed.

  4. Contract language about rights is vague, dense, or buried.

    If you can't find a plain-language answer to "who owns this book when we're done," or the contract takes a lawyer to parse, that's worth pausing on. A legitimate hybrid publisher can tell you in one sentence: you keep 100% of your rights and royalties.

  5. High-pressure sales tactics, especially urgency with no real reason behind it.

    A countdown or deadline tied to a real cohort date or a real enrollment window is normal and honest. Pressure with no verifiable event behind it (a "price goes up at midnight" with no stated reason, repeated every time you visit) is a manufactured urgency tactic, not a real one.

  6. Guaranteed bestseller status or specific sales numbers, promised in advance.

    No legitimate publisher, hybrid or traditional, can guarantee a specific sales outcome for a book that doesn't exist yet. Real results (ours and our clients') are always described as results, not promises, and any income example should carry that distinction explicitly.

  7. No verifiable third-party presence.

    A real company has a real Better Business Bureau profile, real Trustpilot reviews linked to their actual source, and founders who are verifiable public people, not just a polished website. If you can't find any of that, or the links go nowhere, that's worth treating as a serious signal, not a minor omission.
